SOCIAL MEDIA – Disinformation exacerbates tensions

The spread of false information on social media in Madagascar is contributing to heightened tensions between citizens and institutions. From October 10 to 16, 2026, MDM monitoring recorded 212 cases of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation, highlighting the risks of confusion weighing on public debate.

Law enforcement and public authorities are among the primary targets of this misleading content. According to the report, 23.2% of the publications concern the armed forces and the police, compared to 22.6% for public authorities.

The impact of this false information is not limited to social media. An unverified publication can spark outrage, fuel accusations, and influence behavior. When a rumor spreads rapidly, the individuals involved risk being condemned by public opinion even before the facts are established.

The case of two-wheeler drivers in Antananarivo illustrates this phenomenon. A rumor claimed there was a prison sentence of three to ten days for motorcyclists riding on sidewalks. However, this information was incorrect. The Municipal Hygiene Code provides for the impoundment of the vehicles involved, but no incarceration.

The responsibility for information does not rest solely with journalists. It also falls on social media users, whose sharing can either amplify confusion or contribute to preserving the quality of public debate.
