Dr. Felana Ranaivo Rabetokotany: ‘Cancer doesn’t just happen to others’

Dr. Felana Ranaivo Rabetokotany, a medical biologist and cancer survivor, shares her journey in battling the disease. As the founder of E-nao Salama, she discusses the challenges of cancer care in Madagascar, including the lack of medical infrastructure, the brain drain of professionals, and the high cost of treatment.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021, Dr. Rabetokotany emphasizes that while some diagnostic and treatment services exist in Madagascar’s university hospitals, the system suffers from poorly maintained equipment and a lack of supportive care. She highlights that many patients abandon treatment due to financial burdens and misinformation.

Through her association, Ho Salama, and her program E-nao Salama, she aims to provide the psychological and supportive care that is currently missing in the public health system. She calls on authorities to prioritize the maintenance of existing hospital facilities and to make healthcare more financially accessible to prevent avoidable treatment abandonment.
