The defense of African creators’ rights has reached a new international milestone. Laza Razanajatovo, President of the Pan-African Alliance of Screenwriters and Directors (APASER), was honored in Tokyo for his commitment to the rights of African screenwriters and directors during the AVACI–FESAAL 2026 International Congress of Audiovisual Authors.
This recognition highlights his efforts toward better protection for audiovisual authors and fair remuneration for their works. In his speech, the Malagasy director also called for an evolution in professional practices across Africa and Madagascar. “Let us dare to change, transform our ways of working, strengthen transparency, and break with corrupt practices,” he declared, while thanking those committed to this collective mission.
Held on October 20 and 21, the general assemblies of the International Confederation of Audiovisual Authors (AVACI) and the Latin American Federation of Audiovisual Authors’ Societies (FESAAL) brought together representatives from several continents in Tokyo. Discussions focused on defending authors’ rights and strengthening collective management mechanisms.
As a founding member of AVACI, APASER contributes to this momentum to improve the representation of African authors and their remuneration when their works are broadcast. The international circulation of films, the rise of digital platforms, and the development of artificial intelligence are among the key challenges addressed.
For Malagasy professionals, these developments raise essential questions regarding the protection of works and the recognition of creators’ labor. The distinction awarded to Laza Razanajatovo highlights the critical issues surrounding the rights of African audiovisual authors.
