An armed robbery in Ambohidrapeto, near Itaosy, has left two people injured, including the owner’s son who was shot. The assailants fled with cash and remain at large.
Armed criminals attacked a residence in Antsahamasina, in the Ambohidrapeto district near Itaosy, the night before last around midnight. The 26-year-old son of the homeowner was shot in the thigh. A shootout also erupted upon the arrival of law enforcement, during which a police officer was injured by flying glass after a bullet struck the windshield of their vehicle. The attackers managed to escape under the cover of darkness. Despite a pursuit that lasted until the morning, they have not yet been located. Investigations are ongoing.
Alerted by a call, police and gendarmerie arrived simultaneously at the scene minutes after being informed of the attack. The bandits were still inside the house when law enforcement intervened. One of the attackers, who had remained outside, was hiding behind an electric pole at the corner of the perimeter wall. From this position, he fired twice at the officers.
“The windshield of the law enforcement vehicle was hit. A police officer inside was injured by glass shards. A shootout broke out, and the criminals fled, taking advantage of the darkness,” stated a member of the security forces present at the scene.
According to victim testimonies, four individuals armed with rifles participated in the attack. Three forced their way into the house, while the fourth remained outside to keep watch. It was the latter who opened fire upon the arrival of the police and gendarmes. The assailants stole 500,000 Ariary as well as a box containing an additional sum of money, the exact amount of which remains to be determined.
On-site, police and gendarmes gathered information for the investigation, while their colleagues deployed to track down the fugitives. Both injured individuals were evacuated to a hospital in a police vehicle. The gendarmes and police of Itaosy have intensified their efforts to pursue the bandits, with support from law enforcement in surrounding sectors.
