Four children and their pregnant mother perished in a house fire in Berere, in the commune of Maevatanàna II, last weekend. The father of the family was also burned but was rescued in time. Arson is suspected, and law enforcement has launched an in-depth investigation.
The fire broke out around 11 p.m. while the entire family was fast asleep. The flames spread rapidly to the thatched-roof house. The mother and her four children remained trapped inside, while the father managed to escape. The head of the Betsiboka region visited the site to assess the damage, provide assistance to the victims, and offer condolences to the bereaved family.
“According to testimonies collected, it appears to be a case of arson. However, the motive and the identity of those responsible remain to be determined. The father reportedly managed to get out of the house when the disaster struck, but when he returned, three of the children were already dead. The fourth child and the mother succumbed while being transported to the hospital,” the Betsiboka region stated.
