BUSINESS – Investments boost infrastructure development

Madagascar aims to accelerate the implementation of already-funded infrastructure projects to support economic activity and improve living conditions for the population. On October 17, 2026, the Malagasy delegation met with Harold Tavares, representative of the Africa II group at the World Bank, to discuss ways to advance priority projects, particularly in the energy, road, and drinking water sectors.

The modernization of Jirama is among the priorities discussed. Improving electricity supply is essential for businesses, traders, and households. A more reliable service would reduce business interruptions and the associated costs, while improving production conditions.

The rehabilitation of roads connecting regions and production zones is another lever for development. It is intended to facilitate the transport of goods and travel. For farmers and small traders, accessible routes would simplify the delivery of products to markets and could reduce transport costs.

Discussions also focused on access to drinking water, particularly regarding technological solutions for water treatment. Beyond public health issues, improving supply could alleviate household expenses and facilitate daily life in poorly supplied localities.

Access for microfinance institutions to payment networks was also addressed. Their integration into these systems could facilitate transactions and operations for small businesses. Furthermore, the mobilization of private investment was mentioned to support development initiatives.

The priority now is to accelerate the preparation and execution of projects that already have funding. Technical cooperation with the World Bank must continue to examine proposals, clarify financial needs, and define the conditions for implementation.
