Approximately 150 young people from three cities are being targeted by ‘Slang – Freedom 250,’ a program that combines English slam poetry, freedom of expression, and training, with a grand finale scheduled during the Madagaslam 2026 Festival.
English-language slam is opening up to new Malagasy talents. Launched by the U.S. Embassy, the Madagaslam association, and the American Spaces network, the ‘Slang – Freedom 250’ program aims to introduce youth to this form of artistic expression while strengthening their command of the English language, creativity, and public speaking skills.
Around 150 young people aged 18 to 30 with basic English proficiency are being targeted in Antananarivo (70 spots), Mahajanga (40), and Tolagnaro (40). Registration remains open until October 20 before the selection phase begins. Application details are available on the social media pages of Madagaslam and American Corners.
Workshops will begin on October 22 and 23 under the guidance of the organizers and will continue within the American Corners of the three host cities. Mentored by specialists, participants will be trained in exercising freedom of expression, creative writing, critical thinking, and public speaking.
The selections, starting on November 7, will identify two representatives per locality. These finalists will meet in the capital from November 24 to 28 for the Madagaslam 2026 International Festival.
This edition will feature a unique linguistic program spread over two weeks: the first will be dedicated to Anglo-Saxon and Germanic languages, while the second will highlight French and Malagasy. ‘Slang – Freedom 250’ is part of a drive to broaden the perspectives of young slam poets and offer them new international collaboration opportunities. The most notable talents may even perform on English-speaking stages abroad.
While Madagaslam traditionally organizes competitions in Malagasy and French, this initiative gives pride of place to English. The project is also part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States. The promotion of slam will continue until February 2027, leading up to the 50th edition of the festival.
