Dogmatists and Fanatics in the Middle East

The ‘Abraham Accords’ were in sight—a peace between several Arab states and Israel. Palestinian extremists did not want this and deliberately sabotaged it by launching the terrorist attack on October 7, 2023. The International Court of Justice reported: ‘On October 7, 2023, Hamas and other armed groups present in the Gaza Strip carried out an attack in Israel, killing more than 1,200 people, injuring thousands more, and taking some 240 hostages.’

Those who planned this attack expected a very violent reaction from Israel. Worse, they counted on a very brutal reaction. Their wishes were granted. When Palestinian civilian casualties reach the tens of thousands, the Arab street is no longer going to make peace with the Jewish enemy.

Ten years ago, in a column dated July 16, 2014, I concluded that there was an ‘equilibrium of the absurd in Palestine.’ A deadly, suicidal, and dangerously contagious absurdity. The years pass, but the image of civilian desolation remains: donkeys, carts, or pickups, always makeshift mounts overloaded with the poor remnants of a previous life, escorted by crowds of women, children, and the elderly, heading toward refugee camps.

We must not forget the tragedy of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh, Christians abandoned by Orthodox Russia, and barely supported by a Europe hesitant about its own Christian roots. The Armenian convoys fleeing their homes rarely make the headlines.

In this interminable conflict, the extremes have met, digging a trench not between nations, but between the camp of peace and normality on one side, and the camp of war and morbidity on the other. The moral superiority cannot belong to a side that denies the existence of the other while using civilians as human shields, nor to those who resort to terrorism. This equilibrium of the absurd will only be resolved by the resumption of the dialogue that Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat had initiated thirty years ago.
