October 14, 1958, marks a major milestone in Madagascar’s political history with the proclamation of the First Republic. Sixty-eight years later, the city of Antsohihy celebrated this anniversary with great pomp, hosting a national-scale commemoration marked by an imposing civil-military parade and strong popular mobilization, in an atmosphere filled with solemnity and national pride.
For the occasion, the runway of the Ambalabe-Est airport was converted into a parade ground, providing a vast space for the official ceremony. Four large marquees were set up to accommodate the political, administrative, civil, and military figures in attendance.
The review of the troops by the Head of State, Michaël Randrianirina, accompanied by the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, marked the launch of the civil-military parade. The Head of State wore a military green Mao-collar outfit, matched with a white and green scarf, in an ensemble coordinated with that of his wife.
At the official tribune, the presence of the Chadian delegation particularly drew attention. It was led by Ali Kolotou Tchaïmi, President of the National Assembly of Chad since February 4, representing the Chadian President, Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno. This official took his place alongside the President of the Refoundation and his wife, giving the ceremony an additional diplomatic dimension.
Under a scorching sun, thousands of people gathered along the runway. Some spectators even took positions on the surrounding small hills to get a better view of the parade, a novel spectacle for many residents.
The event began with the military section. This grand parade brought together 676 members of the Defense and Security Forces (FDS). Several units marched in a display reminiscent of the major national ceremonies organized at Mahamasina in Antananarivo. Soldiers, gendarmes, and police officers came notably from Antananarivo, Mahajanga, and Antsiranana.
Several specialized units took part in the parade, including the intervention groups of the National Police as well as specialized units of the National Gendarmerie, such as the FIGN and GSIS. Soldiers from the land, naval, and air forces also participated in the parade, as did prison officers.
Among the most notable contingents were the soldiers of the 2nd Marine Infantry Battalion (2e BIMA), who came from Antsiranana. Their attire, marching style, and equipment particularly impressed the public.
Delegations from various regions of Madagascar then took over, followed by numerous social and political associations from Antsohihy and other localities. These civil groups brought a touch of diversity and color to the celebration.
Throughout the route, the population turned out in large numbers to witness the passage of the delegations. The applause and popular enthusiasm gave the event a festive dimension.
Young people of Generation Z, who played a leading role in the 2025 mobilizations, also participated in the parade alongside various associations. Their presence illustrated the generational diversity of this mobilization.
The Fanjiry Association, led by Elisa Randrianirina, wife of the President of the Refoundation of the Republic, also took part in the parade. This day thus combined historical commemoration, official ceremony, and popular gathering.
