From Rossini to Johann Strauss Sr., about twenty young instrumentalists presented the fruits of their labor during the 173rd Noon Classical Concert on Tuesday at the Institut français de Madagascar (IFM).
Madagascar Orchestra continues its exploration of major works from the classical repertoire. Music lovers gathered on Tuesday at the IFM to discover a program ranging from the melodies of Gioachino Rossini to the catchy rhythms of Johann Strauss Sr. About twenty young musicians, led by Antsanirina Rakotoarimino, participated in this event organized in partnership with Madagascar Mozarteum.
Among the works performed, Gioachino Rossini’s Sonata No. 1 in G major stood out for its lively and light melodies. Rearranged by the Madagascar Orchestra to include violas, it already hints at the theatrical style of the future opera composer. A different atmosphere was created with a waltz from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s ballet ‘The Sleeping Beauty,’ where the strings carried a graceful and infectious melody.
The program also featured opera with an excerpt from Georges Bizet’s ‘Carmen,’ presented as the ‘Gypsy Song.’ Finally, the ‘Radetzky March’ by Johann Strauss Sr. added a festive touch to the musical gathering.
Madagascar Orchestra brings together young Malagasy instrumentalists for collective musical practice. The ensemble has explored various works, from Edvard Grieg’s ‘Holberg Suite’ and Mozart’s ‘Eine kleine Nachtmusik’ to the serenades of Tchaikovsky and Dvořák. Recently, the orchestra has incorporated wind instruments, opening up new musical possibilities and supporting the evolution of its repertoire.
