ANTSOHIHY – The Father of Independence stirs the crowds

In Anahidrano, the birthplace of Philibert Tsiranana, the President of the Refoundation and local authorities paid tribute to the first President of the Republic.

A high-level tribute took place in Anahidrano, the cradle of the first President of the Malagasy Republic. The President of the Republic’s Refoundation, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, led a delegation of civil and military authorities for a solemn homage to Philibert Tsiranana. Military honors, a wreath-laying ceremony, and a visit to the former head of state’s residence marked this event dedicated to the memory of the first president and the legacy of independence.

On-site, the population and authorities gathered around the monument dedicated to the “Father of Independence.” This gathering demonstrated the deep attachment many residents feel toward this historical figure. The passing of Philibert Tsiranana has not diminished the affection and respect held by those present. The October 14th celebration revived memories of the man many still affectionately call “Dadilahy” (Grandfather).

From the early hours, Anahidrano was filled with unusual excitement. As official vehicles and SUVs converged on the locality, the crowd grew. The arrival of a helicopter carrying security personnel, protocol officers, and several dignitaries further amplified the atmosphere. By 7:00 AM, traffic on National Road 6, which passes through Anahidrano, became particularly difficult as armed forces and gendarmerie were deployed to render honors.

Associations from Antsohihy, Anahidrano, Mandritsara, Analalava, Port-Bergé, Mampikony, and Befandriana-Nord gathered along the road. Dressed in traditional attire and carrying banners, they participated with traditional songs and dances. Young people from Generation Z also joined, chanting their iconic slogan “Alefaso jiro ôôô,” which became a hallmark of their mobilization during the 2025 events.

Around 9:00 AM, President Michaël Randrianirina and his wife arrived. Following military honors, the President laid a wreath at the foot of Philibert Tsiranana’s statue. The delegation then visited the former president’s residence, where family members, including children of Paul and Pierre Tsiranana, welcomed them.

“The October 14th celebration is a tradition we have upheld every year since 1972,” said Pascal Tsiranana Tsiadino, son of Paul Tsiranana. “We are pleased to see the Refoundation government reviving and strengthening this historical memory. History must always be passed on to future generations, as ignoring the past can come at a high price.”
