At the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona University Hospital (CHUJRA), the influx of patients suffering from renal failure is putting a severe strain on equipment and the supply of consumables.
The nephrology department at the hospital is facing significant challenges. The number of patients treated has multiplied by six over the past decade, while dialysis generators are aging and the supply of consumables remains problematic. This was highlighted during discussions on Monday between the Tsarà Association, which is committed to improving the care of people with kidney failure in Madagascar, and the head of the nephrological intensive care and nephrology research unit.
The association has addressed some of the department’s issues by donating permanent tunneled pediatric catheters. This donation meets a particularly sensitive need regarding the care of young patients requiring dialysis. The mission does not stop there. Founding President Tiana Valiso Rakotonirainy, Vice President Dr. Dominique Rabearivelo, and department officials held a working session with the association’s volunteers in Madagascar to coordinate future actions. They plan to approach the Presidency of the Republic and the Ministry of Public Health to relaunch donations of dialysis generators, medical equipment, and consumables for public hospitals.
The Tsarà Association’s mission, which will continue until October 19, aims to assess health needs, revive medical equipment donation projects, and strengthen cooperation with Malagasy authorities. The association, created in 2011 in France, works to improve access to treatment for people with kidney failure in Madagascar, with a special focus on the most vulnerable patients.
