Restoring smiles. From October 2 to 8, a Japanese medical team worked alongside Malagasy health professionals at the Ave Maria private clinic in Antsirabe to operate on patients with cleft lips, commonly known as “harelip.” This mission combined surgical interventions, technical exchanges, and skills transfer.
Dr. Yasuyoshi Tosa, a Japanese surgeon who has handled approximately 3,000 cases during his career in Japan, shared his experience with the Malagasy teams. His expertise benefited both the patients and the local professionals.
The mission began with the review of medical records and the evaluation of patients to determine the possibilities for intervention. Additional analyses helped to specify the appropriate care for each individual. Some patients were operated on during the mission, while others were referred for subsequent care.
In the operating room, Japanese and Malagasy doctors worked together. Local professionals were able to follow the various stages of the operations and exchange directly with the Japanese specialists. The participating teams also provided the necessary equipment for the procedures.
The mission also placed significant emphasis on training. Malagasy paramedical staff participated in the various stages of care to strengthen their technical skills through practice.
