RN2 – Seven dead in collision between a truck and a taxi-brousse

A serious traffic accident occurred yesterday afternoon on National Road 2 (RN2) at Antsapazana, about five kilometers from Moramanga. A taxi-brousse (public transport minibus) and a truck collided, resulting in the deaths of seven passengers from the public transport vehicle.

The driver of the taxi-brousse was injured, while the truck driver remained missing as of yesterday’s latest reports. Four other passengers, who were seriously injured, have been hospitalized. Other occupants reportedly sustained only minor injuries.

Rescue operations lasted several hours. The seriously injured victims were quickly transported to the hospital. Others, who were unconscious and trapped in the wreckage, had to be extracted. “Six people died on the spot. Five were transported to the hospital, where one succumbed to their injuries. The death toll stands at seven: three women and four men. Three men and one woman remain hospitalized,” stated the law enforcement authorities in Moramanga.

The taxi-brousse was traveling from Toamasina towards the capital when it collided with the heavy goods vehicle. A thorough investigation will determine the causes of the accident. According to initial findings by law enforcement, “the truck involved was overtaking another truck in front of it when it struck the vehicle coming from the opposite direction.” Both vehicles ended up off the road in a shallow ravine.

The taxi-brousse sustained significantly more damage than the truck. Traffic remained fluid on the section where the accident occurred.
