The Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA) has launched a cleanup operation for Lake Behoririka, involving the removal of 15,000 m³ of landfill. The relocation of the 140 affected traders remains uncertain.
The CUA aims to restore Lake Behoririka to its original purpose as a retention basin. Commenced on October 8, the demolition of commercial structures marks the beginning of an operation to remove 15,000 cubic meters of landfill over two months. While the surroundings are clearing up and traffic appears to be improving, the 140 affected traders remain in limbo regarding a relocation they deem restrictive.
Beyond its appearance, the basin plays a vital role in rainwater drainage, collecting water from Behoririka, Ankadifotsy, Antanimena, and Soarano before it reaches the Andriantany canal. The reduction in its capacity contributes to flooding in surrounding streets during heavy rains.
According to Ramanantsoa Faly, head of infrastructure and public works for the commune, the goal is to restore the lake to its initial state. This intervention is part of a broader program to improve rainwater drainage, also covering Mahamasina and Antanimena.
On the ground, demolitions have already changed the landscape. Taxi-be driver Robert notes that traffic flow is improving, though pedestrians still struggle with sidewalks occupied by remaining vendors. For the displaced traders, the CUA has proposed relocation to a covered market near the Ambatomitsangana bridge. However, many find the 1.5 m² stalls too small and fear losing their livelihoods, with some claiming to have operated in the area for sixteen years.
Aina Rakotoarison, Director of Communication for the CUA, emphasized that the municipality intends to continue clearing public spaces, stating, “Sidewalks are for pedestrians, roads for vehicles, and markets for traders.” While the city is committed to restoring the lake’s function, the future of the displaced merchants remains a significant challenge.
