A mission that seems nearly impossible. The Barea Ladies were heavily dominated, losing 0-4 to the South African Banyana Banyana on Friday evening at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, South Africa. The match was the first leg of the qualifiers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Coach Auguste Raux’s squad struggled and could not withstand a much more experienced selection.
The team failed to record any threatening attacks or shots. Numerous ball losses and marking errors were observed. Trailing 0-2 at halftime, the substitutions made by coach Raux could not stop the bleeding in the second half. The Barea, lacking competition and tactical cohesion, merely limited the damage without any effective counter-attacking response. After a narrow victory in the first round of qualifiers with a 1-0 aggregate score against South Sudan, the Barea were pushed to the exit by the South African hosts in the second round.
The chances are very slim for the Malagasy selection, which proved ineffective on all fronts. The two teams will face each other on Tuesday for the second leg at the same Toyota Stadium in South Africa. Will coach Auguste Raux and his players manage to turn the situation around, create a surprise, and attempt the impossible?
