ENERGY – Jirama seeks a way out

The energy situation in Antananarivo is gradually improving, but Jirama remains under pressure. The restoration of equipment, the acquisition of new generators, and the development of renewable energy are key to the company’s recovery plan.

In Antananarivo, the deficit of the Antananarivo Interconnected Network (RIA) has nearly halved in one year, dropping from 44.9 MW in September 2025 to 23.5 MW in September 2026. The company is focusing on rehabilitating existing equipment and importing new generators from Russia and China to bridge the supply gap.

Despite these efforts, the financial situation remains a major hurdle. Jirama produces electricity at a cost of approximately 1,225 Ariary per kWh, while selling it at around 795 Ariary, resulting in an annual loss of about 1.03 trillion Ariary. The company continues to rely on state financial support.

The private sector, represented by the Syndicate of Industries of Madagascar (SIM), acknowledges the improvements but emphasizes that generators are only a partial solution. They are calling for an acceleration of renewable energy projects and improvements in transmission and interconnection infrastructure.

On the ground, residents report mixed experiences. While some neighborhoods have seen a significant reduction in power outages, others still struggle with daily disruptions, highlighting the need for more predictable and stable energy supply.

Looking ahead, long-term recovery depends on major hydroelectric projects such as Volobe, Sahofika, and Antetezambato, which are expected to provide a sustainable energy supply for the country.
