BEHORIRIKA – Merchants relocated

In Behoririka, the Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA) is tackling both clogged canals and the occupation of public thoroughfares. One hundred and forty vendors have been instructed to move to new designated locations.

The CUA launched a cleaning and dredging operation yesterday for the canals surrounding the Behoririka market. The work aims to improve water drainage ahead of the rainy season while enhancing local sanitation. Simultaneously, street vendors are being reorganized and relocated to a nearby site.

The operation began with the clearing of canals, removing accumulated debris and sediment to facilitate water flow. Teams are also working to clear areas where waste has caused significant blockages. The initiative specifically targets the market perimeter, where informal stalls have been obstructing pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

A total of 140 merchants are affected by this reorganization. They are expected to move to the new site starting today. The new area features covered stalls, each measuring 1.5 meters wide, along with sanitary facilities and a parking area to improve customer access.

Inside the market, some merchants hope this change will boost their business, noting that street vendors often divert foot traffic away from the main market halls. Feno Ralambomanana, President of the Special Delegation, emphasized that the reorganization is essential for the city’s benefit and public interest.

The municipality aims to bring order to the market, ensuring each vendor has a defined space to prevent disputes and chaotic occupation. While the allocation process remains sensitive, the authorities are working to formalize the number of traders and ensure an orderly transition.
