MENTAL HEALTH – ’16 Mesures’ Unites Generations of Hip-Hop

Hip-hop is mobilizing for mental health. This Saturday at 1:13 PM, Antsahamanitra will host the ’16 Mesures Live’ event in honor of World Mental Health Day. Organized by Hip Hop Works Madagascar, the event will feature artists including Bogota, Voaygang, Double G., Ko Dobla, A.L.P, Mason’Aloka, Illicit Soul, Tommy Montana, X Crew, Yrist, Yvslf, Scka, Vercors, Tangala, Kintaniavo, Mista, Boska, as well as Lil Guizy and Tata An’Ala. Several surprise guests are also expected.

The project has unfolded in three stages: the ’16 Mesures Contest,’ won by Eklyps ahead of Ho-Toavina and Scka, with Tata An’Ala as the jury’s favorite; the ’16 Mesures Combo,’ which brought together various artists for collaborations; and the ’16 Mesures Live,’ which serves as the final phase. ‘The idea is to bring together old and new generations and create a space where everyone finds their place,’ the organizers explained.

‘Young people need to stand up and take action in the face of this reality,’ says Cédric, from the project’s communications department. Based on a concept originating in the United States, ’16 Mesures’ refers to a classic unit of writing in hip-hop. Through music and rap, the project aims to spread messages about mental health, encourage open dialogue, and convey a message of hope. ‘Music, and particularly hip-hop, allows us to convey the message in a different way,’ the organizers emphasize.

According to WHO estimates, Madagascar has approximately 6.1 suicide deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. The project aims to contribute to awareness and support the establishment of a hotline dedicated to suicide prevention and mental health, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. ‘It is important to shed light on these issues and seek solutions,’ the organizers advocate.
