TOLIARA: The ‘Vain’af’ group sets spirits ablaze

The weekly musical aperitif organized by the ‘Vakok’arts’ at the Alliance Française of Toliara provided a platform for the group ‘Vain’af’ to promote their music, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.

The group consists of four young men in their early twenties: Tantely, Abdillah, Bienvenu, and Hery. They met at the Alliance Française and formed the band in 2022 after participating in the ‘Antso Musique’ project. Their sound is a unique fusion of Southern Malagasy roots, such as ‘tsapiky’, blended with ‘punk pop’.

According to lead vocalist Tantely (stage name ‘Bee’), the name ‘Vain’af’ is derived from the Malagasy words ‘Velona’ (Alive), ‘Aina’ (Life), and ‘Afo’ (Fire), with the suffix ‘af’ representing ‘Africa’, symbolizing the fire of life in African veins. The band draws inspiration from love and their daily environment.

The performance at ‘Vakok’arts’ received high praise from both young and adult attendees, who appreciated the band’s ability to blend traditional Southern rhythms with a modern, energetic punk-pop style. Event organizer Ravotiana noted their impressive stage presence and musical fusion.

Following a successful tour of the Alliance Française network in Madagascar in 2023 and the release of a ten-track album, ‘Vain’af’ is now preparing for the ‘Tsiok’Antimo’ tour in Reunion Island, scheduled from October 28 to November 10. This tour aims to share the vibrant music of Southern Madagascar through workshops, residencies, and concerts.
