MAHAJANGA – Tourism School diplomas officially recognized

The official recognition of diplomas and the acquisition of professional accreditations for graduates of the School of Tourism at the University of Mahajanga, particularly those in the tourist guide program, are currently undergoing a formalization process with the supervisory authorities.

The celebration of World Tourism Day in Mahajanga provided the opportunity to conclude a new partnership between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MESUPRES) and the Ministry of Tourism (MT). This agreement aims to strengthen the professionalization and job placement of graduates from the University of Mahajanga’s School of Tourism.

The agreement was signed on September 27 at the Baobab Tree Hotel on the Corniche in Mahajanga. MESUPRES was represented by its Minister, Professor Ndaohialy Manda-Vy Ravonimanantsoa, and the Ministry of Tourism by Lily Rafaralahy.

This convention marks a new step in valuing the skills and diplomas of the institution’s students. It comes at a time when graduates struggle to enter the professional world due to the seasonality of tourism, competition from the informal sector, and insufficient local infrastructure.

“From now on, upon completion of their training, the concerned graduates will be able to benefit from professional recognition allowing them to practice directly as tourist guides, in accordance with the provisions of the convention,” the Minister stated.

The ceremony is part of a dynamic effort to align university training with the needs of the tourism sector. Prime Minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison, several government members, and representatives from the University of Mahajanga, including the Director of the School of Tourism, attended the event.

Graduates of certain programs, particularly those in tourist guiding at the bachelor’s and master’s levels, have sometimes encountered administrative difficulties in obtaining certificates or professional accreditations issued by the Ministry in charge of Tourism. The recognition of their qualifications facilitates the acquisition of a professional guide card as well as access to management positions in formal sector hotel establishments.
