MAEVATANÀNA – Former Mahajanga MP arrested

Nina Rahantanirina, a former Member of Parliament for Mahajanga, has been held at the Maevatanàna Gendarmerie brigade since Tuesday evening. According to local sources, she is the subject of an investigation regarding a case of illegal gold mining. The case, which involves a mining site that has gained significant attention on social media, particularly Facebook, triggered the intervention of law enforcement.

According to gathered information, Nina Rahantanirina allegedly had a verbal altercation with law enforcement officers who were carrying out their duties at the mining site. Sources indicate that she refused to comply with the measures imposed by the gendarmes, which led to her immediate detention for the purposes of an in-depth investigation.

It should be noted that the Betsiboka region, particularly the districts of Maevatanàna and Tsaratanàna, is among the areas where illegal gold mining is prevalent. Former public officials or individuals with significant influence are regularly suspected of being involved in the protection or operation of these illegal quarries, which often causes tension between the State and the local population.
