Accustomed to participating in the Smooth Night as a backing vocalist since 2017, Yrinaf will take center stage this time. This Friday, the Ibis Hotel & Spa in Ankorondrano will host this 20th edition, dedicated to Mariah Carey and scheduled outdoors by the pool, in front of approximately 400 spectators.
This new responsibility marks an important step in the career of the Malagasy singer and pianist. “It’s the first time I’m truly a headliner. It’s exciting, but there is also pressure,” she confides. The choice of Mariah Carey also has a personal dimension. “It’s a childhood dream. She is one of the artists who rocked my childhood, influenced my way of singing and my musical tastes,” explains Yrinaf. She intends to meet this challenge by working on both the vocal performance and the artistic aspect of the show.
On stage, she will be accompanied by musicians Njaka Rakotonirainy, Tom, Josia Rak., and Joosia Kennediy, as well as backing vocalists Bi, Jakina, and Maholy. Ken, Nate Tex, Mendryka, Trio II G5, and Fidy Dibl will also participate in this evening, which is expected to last about two hours.
Yrinaf’s journey has been built gradually. Coming from a family of musicians, she took her first steps in singing within her family and the church. She became known to the general public in 2012 thanks to the RTA show “The One,” where she took third place. Two years later, she joined the CGM Jazz Club and has since continued her performances in concerts and cabarets.
Created in 2014, the Smooth Night has become a meeting place for African-American music interpreted by Malagasy artists. For its 20th edition, Yrinaf is moving from the role of backing vocalist to that of headliner, a new step in a career she continues to develop.
