Water Desalination: A New Agreement with a Chinese Company

A new player has entered the scene. Madagascar continues its cooperation with Chinese companies in the field of seawater desalination.

A memorandum of understanding was signed on Saturday at the Iavoloha State Palace between the Malagasy government and the company Jiangsu Bangtec Huachuang Sci-Tech. This cooperation aims to strengthen the supply of drinking water in the southern part of the country through desalination. Initially, the agreement provides for a technical, economic, environmental, and social feasibility study, which is a prerequisite for the installation of seawater desalination infrastructure. For now, the number of people who could benefit from the project has not been specified.

According to information released after the meeting, this collaboration is also intended to strengthen the technical and operational capacities of the Malagasy side in the water sector. Financing, management, and maintenance of the infrastructure will also need to be addressed during the project’s implementation.

The populations in the south of the country, particularly in the far south, are constantly exposed to drought and the resulting food insecurity. Climate change exacerbates these risks. The announcement of a possible intense El Niño episode during the 2026-2027 season reinforces fears of drought. Seawater desalination is among the solutions considered to improve access to drinking water in arid zones.

Located in the Nantong High-Tech Industrial Development Zone in China’s Jiangsu Province, Jiangsu Bangtec Huachuang specializes in desalination, water purification, and wastewater treatment technologies.

This is the second Chinese company with which the state is collaborating on desalination. In early August, the state signed an agreement with a Chinese company called Aureate Resources for the installation of a desalination plant in Tsirangoty, in the Ambovombe district. This project plans for a production capacity of approximately 1,500 m³ of drinking water per day, benefiting 75,000 inhabitants, particularly those in the city of Ambovombe.
