A roadmap to better structure the litchi industry is expected to be developed following the National Assizes held in Toamasina on September 23. Producers, processors, exporters, and government representatives formulated proposals focusing on production, quality, marketing, and logistics. These recommendations must be reviewed by a monitoring committee before being submitted to the Government Council and the Council of Ministers.
The discussions covered several key issues, including improving production and quality, as well as the conditions for marketing and transporting litchis. The proposals will be evaluated for technical feasibility by a follow-up commission. The implementation of these measures may involve several ministries, including Trade, Finance, Agriculture, Security, Transport, and Public Works.
Managing production volumes was also a major topic. National production is estimated at 100,000 tons annually, while international market absorption remains limited. Stakeholders emphasize the importance of preserving product quality and marketing conditions.
According to the Ministry of Trade and Consumption, Madagascar accounts for approximately 35% of global litchi exports, ranking first worldwide. The industry supports nearly 100,000 Malagasy families, with the European market absorbing about 15,000 tons of Malagasy litchis annually.
Minister of Trade and Consumption, Haingotiana Andriamadison, stated that the reforms aim to lay the foundation for the protection and development of the sector. The Litchi Exporters Group (GEL), led by President Roland Ratsiraka, emphasizes the need for greater transparency and improved operational practices within the industry.
