At the UN podium, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina called for a profound reform of the multilateral system, specifically advocating for permanent African representation on the Security Council.
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, Colonel Randrianirina, Head of State, emphasized the need to correct a historical imbalance. He stated that Africa, with its 1.4 billion people, must not be sidelined in decisions regarding international peace and security. He cited the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration as the basis for Africa’s demand for justice, equity, and representation, including the right to veto.
Beyond the Security Council, Madagascar proposed three main reforms: rebalancing decision-making powers to restore the General Assembly’s political influence, aligning UN programs with national priorities, and creating a more accessible international financial architecture for vulnerable countries, particularly regarding climate finance.
The Colonel concluded by urging the international community to rebuild the UN to meet modern challenges, ensuring it protects and acts for future generations. Notably, he delivered his speech in Malagasy, a historic first for the nation’s leadership at the UN.
