The Head of State will speak today before the United Nations General Assembly. This will be his first address from the organization’s podium.
Colonel Michaël Randrianirina will deliver his speech almost exactly one year after the start of the demonstrations that preceded his rise to power. This first address is highly anticipated, but the Presidency of the Refoundation of the Republic has not communicated either the time or the content.
The Head of State may present the progress of the reforms undertaken within the framework of the Refoundation. The demonstrations of September and October 2025 drew international attention, particularly due to the role played by the youth of the Gen Z movement. They demanded better access to essential services, integrity in governance, respect for freedoms, and the sanitization of political life. The economic, energy, climate, and diplomatic challenges facing Madagascar could also be addressed.
The international context is also expected to be part of the speech. Madagascar is affected by the fuel crisis linked to the war in the Middle East. Climate change and access to funding from the Green Climate Fund are also among the concerns of the Great Island.
The United Nations high-level week allows states to present their priorities and positions on major international issues. The 2026 edition is themed: ‘Restoring trust, managing transformations: A United Nations that meets the needs of all’.
Before his departure for New York on Monday, Colonel Randrianirina indicated that this trip would also be an opportunity to strengthen Madagascar’s diplomatic ties and address the geopolitical situation. His participation in the 81st General Assembly is part of the Refoundation government’s stated desire to increase its presence on the international stage.
