Many have learned the trade on the job. However, the experience of young masons is not always enough to secure long-term employment or have their expertise recognized. The “Masons’ Clubs” aim to change this by strengthening the skills of young apprentices and professionals, through a partnership between the Ministry of Technical Education and Vocational Training (METFP) and a partner company.
Being a mason in Madagascar often means possessing know-how without necessarily having a diploma to prove it. It also means experiencing periods of intense work, following the pace of construction sites, followed by months of inactivity when contracts are scarce. The Minister of Technical Education and Vocational Training, Dr. Todisoa Andriamampandry, confirms this reality. He emphasizes that the majority of masons in Madagascar learned the trade from their grandfathers or fathers, without having undergone specific training, a situation that can make their professional path more precarious.
Launched on September 19, the vocational training for young masons aims precisely to transform their experience into a real qualification. The partnership between the ministry and Alpha Ciment intends to strengthen the skills of young masons by combining theoretical and practical training. Participants will thus be able to have their professional experience recognized and valued through the validation of acquired skills and obtain a certificate attesting to their competencies.
At the end of the training, participants will receive a certificate that can facilitate their integration into companies and allow them to practice their trade. They will also be able to acquire new skills and broaden their professional prospects beyond masonry. The most successful participants may be recruited by Alpha Ciment or directed to other employers. They will also be able to venture into entrepreneurship and create their own businesses. The selection process, which begins in the Analamanga region, prioritizes young masons who already have experience in the trade, as well as those who demonstrate motivation.
