RUGBY SEVENS – AFRICA MEN’S SEVEN SERIES – Uncertainty for the Makis

The men’s rugby sevens team is set to compete in the Africa Men’s Sevens Series in two weeks. However, the participation remains uncertain as the necessary financial resources have yet to be secured.

Madagascar will participate in the Africa Men’s Sevens Series on October 3rd and 4th in Mauritius. For the Makis, this event requires high-level preparation, as the top three teams will qualify for the Olympic qualifying tournament for the 2028 Olympic Games.

Rugby sevens demands an intense pace and specific physical, technical, and tactical preparation. Before focusing on the field, the Malagasy Rugby Federation must solve a more pressing issue: securing the funds to send the team to Mauritius under proper conditions.

Marcel Rakotomalala, president of Malagasy Rugby, stated that they have submitted the necessary files to the Ministry of Youth and Sports but have yet to receive a response or any subsidy for 2025. He emphasized that financial uncertainty directly impacts the team’s preparation quality compared to teams with secured budgets.

While the state is a key partner, late funding often complicates logistics such as flight bookings and training camps. Malagasy Rugby continues to work closely with sponsors like Star and Orange Madagascar, but the total cost and the breakdown of funding remain critical questions for the team’s participation.
