TRAVEL DIARY – CHINA – Discovering Jiangsu Province

Between canals, lakes, industrial zones, and vast coastal areas, Jiangsu showcases a China where heritage, industry, and ecology advance side by side. From Wuxi to Yancheng, passing through Zhenjiang and Taizhou, the journey reveals a shared ambition: to transform local assets into engines for development and improved daily life.

This is an innovative China. It is not immediately obvious at first glance, but these words quickly come to mind when traveling through Jiangsu province in southern China. Shaped by water and bordered by the Yellow Sea, the Yangtze River, the Grand Canal, Lake Taihu, and river networks accompany both urban and rural landscapes. Behind this aquatic gentleness lies one of China’s most dynamic regions, where industry, technology, and innovation are central.

The first stop is Wuxi. In this cultural city, visitors quickly transition from the landscapes of Lake Taihu to modern districts and spaces dedicated to technology. The city also cultivates another specialty: cinema. Its national digital film industrial park hosts filming, studios, and post-production activities, making cinema a true economic sector.

Next, we head to Zhenjiang, where history and agriculture meet. The city maintains a strong identity linked to its agricultural products and its famous vinegar, while developing connected and more sustainable forms of farming. Digital tools, connected objects, and data platforms are gradually being integrated into the work of farmers. A circular economy has been created around agriculture, resulting in almost no waste during harvests; what is not sold is processed.

Taizhou is a significant stop, offering a glimpse into an economic model that many countries aspire to implement: the special economic zone. Here, the zone focuses on health with the China Medical City. Spanning nearly 30,000 square kilometers, it brings together about two thousand companies ranging from research, high-tech laboratories, and pharmaceutical development to testing, production, and health services.

Then comes Yancheng, facing the Yellow Sea. Wind turbines and solar installations serve as a reminder that the energy transition is no longer just a stated goal; it is reflected in infrastructure, industrial parks, and new economic activities.

This journey through Jiangsu leaves a lasting impression: a province that seeks to make technology a concrete tool. Whether it is cleaner energy, smarter agriculture, more specialized industry, or more integrated health services, innovation is seen as a means to improve both regional competitiveness and the living conditions of its inhabitants.
