A serious traffic accident resulted in numerous casualties and significant damage on National Road 6 in Ambilobe the night before last. Two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collided violently. According to additional information gathered on-site, eight people lost their lives. Several others were injured and are still receiving care. Some, suffering from multiple and serious injuries, had to be urgently evacuated to Antsiranana.
The accident occurred around 9 p.m. in Antsoha, on the national road at the southern entrance of Ambilobe. An off-road vehicle belonging to a private individual was returning from a party organized in the commune of Beramanja, in the north. It collided with a Mercedes Sprinter bush taxi (taxi-brousse) that was transporting passengers from Sambava to Antananarivo.
According to the information gathered, the overtaking of a tractor that was preceding one of the two vehicles is believed to be the cause of the accident. Six people, including children and the driver of the 4×4, died instantly.
The injured were transported to the Ambilobe hospital. However, two other people succumbed to their injuries. These are believed to be the driver of the bush taxi and his assistant. Eighteen injured people were still being treated. Fourteen of them were reportedly seriously wounded. Two were evacuated to Antsiranana.
Among the eight deceased, five were male and three were female. Children are among the victims. Six of the deceased were on board the off-road vehicle.
