The gold sector is gradually resuming its activities in the country. After a sixteen-year hiatus, the government reopened the possibility of applying for gold mining permits last August. According to statements made by the Minister of Mines, Andriamparany Carl, last Saturday, legal exports of the yellow metal are now authorized once again.
“I would like to clarify that only holders of a ‘counter approval’ (agrément de comptoir) can apply for a legal gold export permit. The processing of export applications is handled exclusively at the single export window of the Mining Business Center in Ivato. This center brings together representatives from the State, Customs, the National Anti-Fraud Agency (ANAF), and the Madagascar Mining Laboratory,” explained Minister Carl Andriamparany.
On Saturday, two companies holding a ‘counter approval’ had already submitted their applications for gold export permits. Despite the decision taken by the State sixteen years ago, clandestine mining and exporting of gold have continued in the country. Numerous shipments have reportedly left the territory, according to reports published abroad. However, some are intercepted at Ivato airport, as occurred again on Sunday, September 13.
