Antananarivo City Hall will transform into a space dedicated to discovering American culture and history on September 26 and 27. The U.S. Embassy in Madagascar is organizing the “Freedom Festival,” a free event open to the public, as part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States.
Over two days, the public will be able to explore various facets of the United States through history, cinema, music, English learning, innovation, studies, and entrepreneurship. An exhibition dedicated to the Founding Fathers will notably allow visitors to reflect on the origins of the construction of the United States.
Cinema and music will also play an important role in the program, with screenings of American films as well as a spelling bee and a singing competition. Activities allowing participants to practice English with native speakers are also planned.
The festival also aims to highlight exchange opportunities between Madagascar and the United States. The public will be able to learn about study opportunities in the U.S. from EducationUSA and interact with alumni of exchange programs.
Innovation will be showcased through a pavilion dedicated to virtual reality and space exploration. Furthermore, American companies and brands established in Madagascar will present their activities and products, providing an overview of the economic relations between the two countries.
“250 years ago, a small group of American patriots changed the world, and their spirit of freedom and innovation is still very much alive today,” emphasized Tom Bevan, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires for Madagascar and Comoros. The “Freedom Festival” is intended to introduce elements of American history while highlighting the ties between Madagascar and the United States, according to the diplomat.
The relations between Madagascar and the United States will also be discussed through their historical and commercial dimensions. They date back to the Treaty of Peace, Friendship, and Commerce signed between the two countries nearly 160 years ago.
The event is organized with the support of the Urban Commune of Antananarivo, which is providing the City Hall for the two days. Other “Freedom Festival” activities are expected to be announced later in the year at various American Corners in Madagascar.
