The Ihorombe region and Adema (Aéroports de Madagascar) are actively working on the rehabilitation process of the Ihosy aerodrome, with the primary goal of boosting the local tourism sector. Closed for nearly thirty years, the airfield is currently undergoing initial feasibility studies for its reopening.
A team from Adema, led by Director General Jean Germain Andrianiaina, and local authorities, including the head of the Ihorombe region, Tsiverihasy Tialy Ramilavonjy, conducted a technical assessment of the site in Ankadilanambe. The project aims to pave the current dirt runway with bitumen to accommodate ATR 42 aircraft. This initiative is a key component of the Ihorombe Regional Development Plan (PRD), intended to improve accessibility and promote tourism, particularly given the proximity to the Isalo National Park.
The rehabilitation project requires comprehensive technical, economic, land, and environmental studies before final state approval and funding can be secured. The Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts, led by Minister Lily Rafaralahy, has expressed support for the project, viewing it as a vital step in opening up the region and fostering ecotourism. Once operational, the airport is expected to facilitate private tourist flights, emergency medical evacuations, and potentially regular commercial services, significantly benefiting the region’s connectivity and economic growth.
