Staying longer, better distributing visitors, and adding more value to territories. Madagascar intends to promote “slow tourism” as one of the approaches to developing more sustainable tourism. This direction was highlighted during the Great Island’s participation in the 48th edition of IFTM Top Resa, held in Paris from September 15 to 17, 2026.
According to the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts, the principle involves avoiding the concentration of visitors in a few destinations and during certain times of the year. Madagascar wishes to encourage a better distribution of tourist flows across different regions and favor stays that allow visitors to discover territories more deeply.
This approach is also intended to strengthen the economic benefits of tourism at the local level. The participation of local communities (Vondron’Olona Ifotony – VOI) in the management of tourist sites is among the avenues proposed. The goal is to involve populations living around destinations more closely in their management and promotion.
Slow tourism is also part of a desire to better link tourism activities with local expertise and production. Promoting “Vita Malagasy” (Made in Madagascar) handicrafts in accommodation establishments and hospitality activities was among the guidelines discussed in Paris.
The development of this type of tourism must simultaneously take into account the capacity of sites to host visitors. Defining limits for the most fragile destinations is presented as a way to reduce pressure on natural resources and ecosystems.
Environmental and cultural heritage protection is another component of this orientation. Respect for natural resources, cultural sites, and local customs must accompany the development of tourism activities.
The promotion of slow tourism comes as Madagascar still faces several structural challenges to improve the visitor experience. The state of infrastructure and the accessibility of major destinations remain key issues for the sector.
The cost of air transport is also a determining factor in accessing Madagascar as a destination. Seeking funding for projects contributing to environmental protection and the development of sustainable tourism is also among the identified challenges.
These various topics were addressed during discussions attended by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts, Dr. Léa Razanamaria, during IFTM Top Resa. Madagascar’s presence at this professional event also aimed to strengthen exchanges with international actors and partners and to promote the destination to the international market.
Held under the theme “The Value of Travel,” the 48th edition of IFTM Top Resa took place from September 15 to 17 in Paris. Nearly 180 destinations and 1,700 brands were represented, with some 34,000 professionals expected. Uzbekistan was the guest of honor.
