Residents have denounced the construction of a new sheet-metal structure on a sidewalk at a busy intersection near a military enclosure in Tanambao Morafeno, citing safety risks for students and traffic. Similar issues persist in Ankilifaly and along the main Monja Jaona avenue, where vendors have replaced temporary stalls with permanent wooden and metal structures, destroying public landscaping.
Vendors, such as Ginah, argue that they occupy sidewalks due to a lack of space in official markets like Scama and Bazar Be, and the high cost of renting formal premises. They claim municipal agents sometimes collect daily occupation fees of 1,000 ariary, creating a complex situation regarding enforcement.
Tondraha Razaha, the newly appointed PDS of Toliara, emphasizes the need for good local governance and discipline. He stated that the municipality will review each case of illegal construction and occupation, with potential actions ranging from demolition to mandatory regularization. He plans to conduct site visits in the coming days to assess the situation and engage with the occupants to find solutions.
