The Tana International Marathon (MIT) is moving through uncertain territory. While rumors of the cancellation of the 2026 edition are already circulating among athletes who have been preparing for months for this major event, no official confirmation has yet put an end to the suspense. When asked about the situation, Tina Rajaona, representative of VIMA, the official sponsor of the Antananarivo International Marathon, remains cautious. “Everything has not been decided yet, and we will contact you for the next steps,” she stated.
The Malagasy Athletics Federation echoed this sentiment. Its president, Norolalao Andriamahazo, explained that “it is not yet truly confirmed that the event is canceled. Let’s wait a little longer, as we are awaiting news from VIMA.”
This situation is particularly notable as the 2026 edition was meant to be symbolic. The Tana International Marathon was set to celebrate its 20th edition, following the postponement of the edition initially planned for 2025. This event was expected to highlight a race that has become one of the most important fixtures in Malagasy athletics over the years.
The potential removal of the MIT from this year’s calendar, if confirmed, would have consequences for athletes aiming for a spot in the Malagasy selection for the 2027 Indian Ocean Island Games. With one year to go, such competitions serve as essential tests for both runners and technical officials. This uncertainty once again raises questions about the funding and sustainability of major sporting events in Madagascar, as dependence on private partners can jeopardize events that are otherwise well-established in the national calendar.
