Five customs agents are being questioned as part of an investigation into the attempted smuggling of approximately six kilograms of gold at Ivato International Airport. The customs administration states it is committed to shedding full light on any potential responsibilities.
The case, confirmed by Customs Director General Antoine Randrianjafy in Antaninarenina, has entered a new phase. The investigation aims to determine how such a significant quantity of gold reached the airport and to identify those responsible. At this stage, their involvement in the inquiry does not imply guilt, as the judicial process must determine individual accountability.
The Director General emphasized that the administration will not protect agents who fail their duties or engage in corruption, noting that the department is currently undergoing reforms. The seizure, which occurred as a woman was boarding a flight to Nairobi via Dar es-Salaam, was made possible through collaboration between the Presidency and Customs.
Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, the Head of State, visited the scene to oversee the situation, signaling a firm stance against such illicit activities. As the investigation continues, authorities stress the importance of transparency and procedural integrity to maintain public trust in border control services.
