ELECTIONS – HVM opposes independent candidacies

The HVM party held a provincial congress in Antananarivo over the weekend. Among the resolutions adopted is the abolition of independent candidacies in elections.

The goal is to sanitize the political environment. With this in mind, the provincial congress of the “Hery Vaovao ho an’i Madagasikara” (HVM) party, held in Antananarivo, put forward a resolution: “the abolition of independent candidacies.”

For the “Blues” (HVM members), candidates for elective office should be exclusively presented by a formal political party. They justify this position by the desire to “clean up the political arena and put an end to political nomadism and the variable geometry within Parliament, which disrupts institutional stability.” In parallel, the congress resolutions also recommend a reform of the law on political parties.

The versatility of political actors, particularly elected officials, has been at the heart of recent debates, largely due to the territorial networking currently being established by the “Vovonan’ny Fihavaozan’i Madagasikara” (VFM) platform. This entity, composed of deputies and mayors who have pledged allegiance to the Refoundation power, is subject to sharp criticism, even from within the ranks of those supporting the current regime.

The reason lies in the fact that the VFM brings together dissident deputies from the “Isika rehetra miaraka amin’i Andry Rajoelina” (Irmar) platform, as well as elected officials from its former ally, the Union of Supporters of Andry Rajoelina (Upar). The same observation applies to mayors, as many who join the VFM today were originally elected under the “Orange” banner.

During the closing ceremony of the HVM provincial congress for the Antananarivo province on Saturday in Itaosy, party discipline and loyalty to its guidelines were strongly emphasized. The HVM also called for a reform of the legal framework for elections, considering it the basis for a credible, inclusive, and universally accepted election.

The event also provided an opportunity for Hery Rajaonarimampianina, former President of the Republic and founder of the HVM, to recall his political program, “Fisandratana 2030.” While awaiting the next electoral deadlines, the HVM reaffirmed its support for the Refoundation power.
