Madagascar has appointed two new ambassadors. Rivo Rakotovao, former President of the Senate, former interim Head of State, and former minister under Hery Rajaonarimampianina, has been sent to Brussels. He will represent Madagascar as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium and as a representative to the European Union. Georget Mandehatsara, also a former minister during the Transition led by Andry Rajoelina, and a former regional head and prefect of Tolagnaro, will lead the diplomatic mission in New Delhi.
Before members of the Malagasy diaspora in Belgium on Thursday, the President of the Republic had already announced that the Executive was only waiting for the approval of the Belgian authorities to appoint the successor to Jean Omer Beriziky, who left Belgium in January 2025. “This approval has been obtained,” he announced, “and the ambassador will be appointed at the next Council of Ministers.”
Rivo Rakotovao will therefore continue the work to “warm up diplomatic relations” between Madagascar and Belgium. Returning to the country on Friday evening, the Head of State announced that the dispute between the Great Island and Belgium regarding the compensation of a Belgian company that was a victim of looting during the 2009 political crisis had just been settled during his trip. He mentioned negotiations to reduce the amount that the government still owes to the company in question.
For his part, Georget Mandehatsara takes charge of a diplomatic representation that had been entrusted to chargés d’affaires for more than 10 years. Created in 2008, the embassy was first entrusted to Olivier Sahobisoa Andrianarison. Before him, the position was held by Bruno Ranarivelo, with residence in Mauritius.
