Madagascar is set to appoint a new ambassador to Belgium, nearly two years after the departure of its last representative. This decision comes as both nations express a desire to revitalize and warm up bilateral relations that had previously cooled, according to Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever. Colonel Michaël Randrianirina stated in Brussels on Thursday that the name of the future head of the Malagasy diplomatic mission will be announced at the next Council of Ministers.
The position of Madagascar’s ambassador to Belgium had been vacant since January 2025, following the revocation of Omer Beriziky’s appointment. According to the President of the Refondation, the Belgian government’s approval, a prerequisite for the appointment, has now been secured. “We have obtained the agreement of the Belgian government and will proceed with the appointment of this ambassador,” Colonel Randrianirina declared during a meeting with the Malagasy diaspora in Belgium.
This appointment coincides with a mutual desire from both authorities to give new momentum to their cooperation. Upon arriving in Brussels on Thursday, September 10, the Malagasy Head of State held a very cordial meeting with Prime Minister Bart De Wever. The Belgian Prime Minister acknowledged the past cooling of relations but emphasized that the time has come to develop and strengthen them.
Discussions focused on private sector cooperation, with Colonel Randrianirina indicating Madagascar’s readiness to welcome Belgian investors. The parties also explored potential Belgian support for Madagascar in negotiations with the European Union, particularly regarding green financing for the Volobe infrastructure project. Furthermore, cooperation with the Belgian development agency is expected to be strengthened to foster deeper exchanges between the two nations.
The visit also included a European dimension, as Colonel Randrianirina met with Kaja Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, to broaden discussions on relations between Madagascar and European institutions.
