Judicial and prison authorities reported yesterday an alleged plot to help a prisoner escape from Tsiafahy prison and set fire to the facility.
The Public Prosecutor of the Antananarivo Court of First Instance and the Regional Director of Prison Administration provided details on an ongoing investigation into the high-security Tsiafahy prison. According to their statements, a plan to facilitate the escape of a detainee and set the facility on fire had been prepared.
The alleged plot was unsuccessful. Several suspects have been identified and arrested. Some have been placed in pre-trial detention, while others remain at large and are subject to arrest warrants.
“Intelligence indicated a plan to help a detainee escape and burn down the high-security prison of Tsiafahy. Security was reinforced on Sunday, August 23. During such situations, the standard procedure involves searches within the prison. It was during these operations that a mobile phone was discovered in the cell of Colonel Patrick Rakotomamonjy,” explained Principal Inspector Olivier Ranaivoson, Regional Director of Prison Administration for Analamanga.
The investigation following the discovery of the phone led investigators to examine its contents and recorded communications. According to the Public Prosecutor, Narindra Navalona Rakotoniaina, investigations revealed two scenarios planned for the prisoner’s escape. One involved arson and explosions to create chaos, with a woman residing abroad allegedly seeking 4,000 euros in funding for the operation. The second scenario involved falsifying medical records with the alleged complicity of a doctor to secure the prisoner’s release.
