The death toll from the traffic accident that occurred the day before yesterday afternoon at the exit of the Ambohidahy tunnel has risen to four.
A public transport minibus (taxi-be) struck several pedestrians. Two women, who were seriously injured in the accident, eventually succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital. One, aged 77, was a mother, as was the other, who was 57.
Yesterday, both families were at the hospital to complete the procedures related to the deaths and the release of the bodies from the morgue. The body of another woman, who had passed away earlier, was also still at the morgue. As for the man, a rescuer who also lost his life in the accident, his body had already been returned to his family following a wake and a tribute held yesterday at the rescue barracks in Tsaralalàna.
The two mothers were close friends and were walking together when they were struck by the vehicle. Their relatives met at the hospital and, while exchanging information, realized that both women had been victims of the same accident.
“My mother had just finished work in Analakely and was heading home to 67 Ha when she was struck with her friend. The hospital called me. I came here and found her still being treated. One side of her head was severely swollen. She was still talking and complaining of intense pain. She also had a scan, but she passed away around 7:30 p.m.,” testified the son of the first victim.
“Our older sister was still able to provide her child’s name and phone number when she arrived at the hospital. We, the family members, then arrived. She kept talking, complaining of pain, vomiting a lot of blood, and groaning. She fought for a while. The doctors explained the situation to us and encouraged us, but her condition did not improve. She passed away around 6 p.m.,” recounted the sister of the second victim.
As a reminder, nine pedestrians were victims of the accident after being struck by the taxi-be at the exit of the Ambohidahy tunnel. A man and a woman died first, followed by the two other women. Among the other injured, some have already been able to return home, while others remain hospitalized. The police investigation into the accident is ongoing.
