Bicycle taxis are becoming increasingly visible in the capital. This mode of transport is primarily attractive due to its affordable cost.
They weave between vehicles at all hours to transport passengers and goods, constantly expanding their reach. While their use began in Anosizato and Anosibe a few years ago, these cycle taxis now park or operate in Anosy and venture as far as the city center (Ambohijatovo, Analakely), even reaching Antanimena and Ankorondrano. “Our clients are no longer limited to Anosy. Some ask to go as far as Analakely, or even Ankorondrano,” says Franck, who has been working in this trade for several years.
Many users turn to this alternative for its speed over short distances, especially in highly congested areas. For drivers, this job represents an accessible source of income requiring minimal investment. “We have no expenses other than the daily payment of 15,000 ariary,” says Ezra, a cycle taxi driver himself. Many see it as a way to escape unemployment.
However, the expansion of the sector raises questions. The lack of clear regulation worries some observers, who point to risks related to road safety, the lack of technical inspection of equipment, or competition with formal transport. “They ride in the middle of the road where motor vehicles travel at speeds much higher than theirs,” warns Hery, a motorist. Other road users also report that most of them do not master the traffic laws.
Local authorities have not yet communicated on the implementation of a specific framework. In the meantime, bicycle taxis continue to gain ground.
