The Akio team exits the group stage of the 33rd African Men’s Junior Handball Championship with a record of three defeats in three matches. Madagascar suffered a heavy loss against Nigeria (17-50) on Tuesday in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, in their final Group B match.
Having already been defeated by Angola (17-49) on the first day and then by Algeria (15-46) on Monday, the Malagasy selection failed to turn the situation around against Nigeria. The Great Island thus finishes last in Group B with zero points, behind Angola, Nigeria, and Algeria, all of whom are credited with four points.
The final group match confirmed Madagascar’s difficulties in this phase. Against the Nigerians, the Malagasy scored 17 goals compared to 50 for their opponents, a gap of 33 goals. This margin was 32 goals against the Angolans and 31 against the Algerians. Conceding 145 goals in total, Madagascar only scored 49.
With this third defeat, Madagascar is eliminated from the race to qualify for the 2027 Junior World Championship. The Akio will play a ranking match this Wednesday against Zimbabwe, which also finished last in Group A with zero points. The competition, which brings together sixteen men’s junior teams, continues in Abidjan until September 12.
