Street vendors operating in Anosy have been ordered to clear the sidewalks. The Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum for them to vacate the area, according to statements made yesterday by the Director of Markets, Gilles Randrianantoandro, following an intervention in front of the Havoria building. “It was originally a garden. Due to being trampled by merchants, this green space has completely disappeared,” the official lamented.
The municipality is calling on everyone to comply with market regulations and specifies that no commerce is authorized outside of designated zones. However, as of yesterday afternoon, vendors were still occupying the site despite the warning. The surroundings of Lake Anosy and the areas in front of administrative buildings remain heavily encroached upon by informal trade.
For the majority of these merchants, this activity is primarily a means of subsistence in the face of unemployment. “I lost my job as a driver two years ago. This is the only work I found to feed my family,” confided a vendor stationed by the lake.
Faced with the situation, the merchants are requesting relocation so they can continue their activities. Regarding this, Gilles Randrianantoandro clarified that vendors can join the market of their choice, subject to available space.
“There are likely still free spots in the markets of Andravoahangy, Coum 67Ha, or Petite Vitesse,” he indicated.
The municipality is intensifying its sanitation operations throughout the capital. However, these interventions have produced little result so far, and the streets remain constantly reoccupied.
