DEVELOPMENT – Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence in Tourism Transformation at the Heart of WTD 2026

Celebration. World Tourism Day (WTD) 2026 will focus on the role of digital technology and artificial intelligence in transforming the tourism sector. In Madagascar, this theme will be at the center of the national celebration scheduled from September 24 to 27 in Mahajanga. Digital technologies can play a key role in designing offers, promoting them, improving access to information, and adapting services to visitor expectations.

According to the Minister of Tourism, Lucie Voloniaina “Lily” Rafaralahy, “the challenge is not limited to the adoption of new tools.” She believes that “digital technology and AI can intervene at different levels of the tourism value chain.” Several roundtables will bring together tourism professionals, digital actors, and sector partners in the ‘City of Flowers’. Discussions will focus on the opportunities offered by these technologies, as well as the conditions for their use and their contribution to sustainable development. The goal is to evolve Malagasy tourism offerings and make the destination more connected and accessible.

The celebration will also highlight the tourism assets of the Boeny region, with over a hundred stands dedicated to tourism, handicrafts, and related activities. The blue economy, artisanal expertise, and natural sites will be showcased. Organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts in collaboration with the National Tourism Office of Madagascar (ONTM), professionals, and the private sector, this edition aims to combine reflection on new technologies with the promotion of local tourism realities.
