Three months after his appointment to the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of First Instance (TPI) of Mahajanga, Public Prosecutor André Andrimpirenena met with Judicial Police Officers (OPJ) last Friday at the TPI headquarters in Mahajanga Be. This first meeting since he took office reflects his commitment to strengthening rigor in the application of the law.
The meeting aimed to optimize work strategies while strengthening the cooperation and efficiency of the OPJ. The agenda and directives provided by the Prosecutor’s Office focused on several key areas, including procedural rigor. The handling of criminal and correctional cases will require increased monitoring to ensure strict compliance with current legislative texts.
“Strengthening the capacity of officers and establishing a new organization and method are the main pillars of this session. It primarily aims to improve the relationship between the Prosecutor’s Office and the OPJ, as well as the quality of investigations. Recently, child abductions and kidnappings have made headlines; in this context, we are trying to implement prevention strategies against this scourge. A particular emphasis will be placed on offenses against minors or violence against minors,” explained the Public Prosecutor.
This meeting between the Prosecutor’s Office and the OPJ is part of the dynamic of reorganization and strengthening of judicial requirements, driven by the new appointments of magistrates in Mahajanga.
In Madagascar, the Judicial Police Officer (OPJ) is responsible for noting violations of criminal law, gathering evidence, and searching for perpetrators. Their main missions consist of identifying crimes, offenses, and contraventions in the field. The Public Prosecutor or investigating judge is responsible for directing investigations and coordinating searches.
As part of their investigations, OPJs conduct hearings, searches, seizures, and police custody. Specialized OPJs also intervene in the environmental field to combat ecological offenses. The Prosecutor’s Office and the OPJ must work in concert and harmonize their methods to improve the efficiency of investigations and achieve better results.
