A strategic turning point for the Great Island’s financial diplomacy: Madagascar has assumed the presidency of the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group (ESAAMLG). The handover ceremony between Rwanda and Madagascar took place during the organization’s ordinary meetings in Kigali, which concluded this Saturday.
To underscore the importance the government places on this regional responsibility, the Malagasy delegation was led by Prime Minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison. The delegation also included representatives from the Presidency, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Financial Intelligence Unit (SAMIFIN), and the Central Bank of Madagascar (Banky foiben’i Madagasikara).
For this one-year term, spanning from September 2026 to August 2027, Madagascar has established a clear roadmap centered on four strategic priorities: the effective conduct of the third round of mutual evaluations, the fight against environmental crimes and illicit financial flows, the modernization of data management, and risk-based supervision.
By taking the helm of the ESAAMLG—which brings together 21 member countries in East and Southern Africa, including Rwanda, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, and Mauritius, and operates as a FATF-style regional body—Madagascar reaffirms its determination to combat money laundering, terrorist financing, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
This presidency serves as a lever to protect the national economy, ensure financial security, and assert the country’s active role on the international stage. As a strong symbol of this commitment, Madagascar will host the ESAAMLG Council of Ministers meeting in August 2027.
