Another Malagasy book is making waves on the international stage. The novel “Fortune,” the debut work by Elie Ramanankavana, has been selected as one of the 12 finalists for the 2026 Senghor Prize for Francophone and Francophile First Novels. Following months of selection, organizers unveiled the shortlist last week, chosen from 36 submissions sent by publishers between February and July 2026.
“I am happy that Malagasy literature has its place in the literary season,” rejoices Elie Ramanankavana. Beyond the international recognition of a work from Madagascar, he is particularly pleased that “local stories resonate with the world.” He emphasizes that it is not just about amplifying Malagasy literature in the Francophone space, but about telling and representing our own history ourselves. “Taking charge of our own narratives is a major challenge. It is perhaps the most important one,” the writer insists. “We should not just be told by others. We must tell our own stories first. It is essential,” he continues.
Published by Edern Editions in the ‘Les Contemporains’ collection, “Fortune” is the only Malagasy title in this selection. It stands alongside debut novels by writers from France, Switzerland, Canada, Reunion Island, and the DR Congo. Having been presented at the African Book Fair a few months ago, the book is expected to be launched in Madagascar this September and will soon be available in local bookstores.
In “Fortune,” Elie Ramanankavana, born in 1995, a poet, novelist, and art critic, tells the story of a young woman shattered by the death of her mother, who was a victim of corruption within the Malagasy justice system. The narrative follows the trajectory of this young woman who, driven by a desire for revenge, embarks on a path of violence where she eventually becomes indistinguishable from what she fights against.
Created in 2006, the Senghor Prize for Francophone and Francophile First Novels rewards a debut novel in the French language each year and pays tribute to Léopold Sédar Senghor. Previous winners include Annie Lulu, Loo Hui Phang, and Rachel M. Cholz, with the 2025 prize awarded to Quebecer Catherine Perreault for “L’Élu.” The winner of the 2026 edition is expected to be announced by the end of the month.
